Tiling is one of the more creative and fun parts of designing your kitchen. There are so many options to consider when deciding where to use tile, and how to layout your design. The backsplash is probably the most common area tiled in kitchens, but you don’t have to limit yourself. Tiling can be used for countertops and floors, too.

Besides the wide variety of colors to choose, there are also many different materials used for tiling. Here are some of the more common options:

TILES COLLECTION

CERAMIC TILES

Very common in bathrooms, ceramic tiles can also work in your kitchen. This glazed, ceramic based tile cleans easily, is nonporous, and is available in many colors and styles. One downfall to ceramic tiling is if it chips or cracks, you'll be able to tell from a distance, since the base is a different color than the glaze.

A popular style you may want to consider is the subway tile. This is created with 3” x 6” or 4” x 8” tiles, laid out in a brick pattern.

PORCELAIN TILES

Porcelain tiles are known for their imitation of real stone, since they vary slightly from tile to tile. Porcelain tiles are consistent in color and material throughout. So, if porcelain tile chips, you won't see it as easily as you do with ceramic tiling. Durable and visually appealing, porcelain tiling is available at a great price, making it a popular choice.

GLASS TILES

You can design a truly unique bathroom with glass tiles. Some people use glass tiling for borders or mosaics. Also, because light reflects off each tile, which in turn highlights others, glass tiles create an absolutely beautiful look. Installation can be tricky, but it's well worth the extra effort. Once considered to be out of the budget range of many people, glass tiling is now more affordable.

JERUSALEM STONE TILE

Wooden countertops give your kitchen a warm, natural look. Usually made from birch or maple, it's also available in walnut, mahogany, and ebony. Butcher Block Maple is the most popular. Wooden countertops do require regular upkeep, are porous, and are sensitive to heat and moisture. You may choose to use Butcher Block in only one area of your kitchen, and use a more durable, less sensitive material for the rest of your counters.

MARBLE TILE

Marble offers a classical look to a modern kitchen. With varying texture and tones, marble is available in large range of colorings. While beautiful, marble requires polishing every few years, not something busy people are always interested in dealing with. A couple other disadvantages you'll want to keep in mind -- marble can stain and is porous.

METAL TILE

STOCK CABINETS

If you're working with a small budget or on tight time schedule, stock cabinets may be the best choice for you. Available in a variety of door styles, wood species and finishes, materials, and textures, stock cabinets typically come in 3” width increments and 6” height increments.

SEMI STOCK CABINETS

Semi stock cabinets offer more flexibility than stock cabinets, giving you more options on things like cabinet depths and styles. Your options are less than with custom cabinetry, but the prices are lower.

CUSTOM CABINETRY

Custom cabinetry opens up your choices beyond what's readily available from cabinet manufactures. Your custom cabinets can be made in any material, style, color, or shape you choose. Many upgrade to custom cabinetry to get a wood finish or style not available with stock or semi stock.

FRAMED CABINETS

Being the more traditional method of cabinet design, most stock cabinets are framed. Framed cabinets are manufactured by creating an approximately 1 by 2 frame face for the cabinet box, which the raw edges of the cabinet's sides, top, and bottom are then attached.

THERMO-FOIL CABINETS

Durable and easily cleanable, ThermoFoil is resistant to water and moisture. A vinyl material covers the doors as one seamless piece. Unlike high-pressure laminate, like Formica®, ThermoFoil will not lead to separation along the seams. ThermoFoil is available in a variety of colors and wood-like styles.

EUROPEAN CABINETRY European Cabinetry

European cabinetry is popular for its modern, high-tech look, which isn't currently available locally. Most often imported from Italy and Germany, European cabinets are pricey, but feature a stylish look, along with modern gadgets and hardware.

BASE CABINETS

Base cabinets provide storage space and a place to work. Usually 24” deep and 34 ¹/₂” high, base cabinets sit on the floor and are covered by countertop.

WALL CABINETS

As the name suggests, wall cabinets are attached directly to the wall. They are usually 12” deep, and come at a standard height of 30”. However, if you want taller cabinets, you can often get them in 6” increments as well, like 36” and 42”.

GLASS CABINETS

Glass cabinets are both beautiful and create a feeling of increased space. Usually wall cabinets, glass cabinets have glass instead of solid doors.

TALL CABINETS

Tall cabinets extend from the floor up beyond countertop height, usually level with the tops of wall cabinetry. Typically standing at 84” high, they are also available at 6” increases. They are most popular at 12” and 24” deep.
